Training involves detailed orientation to the goals and philosophies of CISV, the administrative and legal requirements of travelling as an adult assigned primary responsibility for the health and safety of children and issues of risk management and appropriate handling of unanticipated events. Leaders, who must be at least 21 years of age, are also required to meet many times with the children that they will be travelling with prior to attending a Village, Summer Camp or participating in an Interchange. This is in order to ensure that the group knows one another well and has established suitable communications with one another.
Leaders are carefully selected from applicants who must demonstrate a strong interest in the goals and philosophy of CISV and demonstrates the maturity and experience to handle the responsibilities assigned to them. Many leaders are indviduals who have been active in CISV for many years who may have started their involvement as eleven year old Village delegates. However, previous CISV experience is not a mandatory requirement for being assigned a leadership position.
